How to craft a 30-60-90 day plan
An exciting update: We are restarting the brunchwork newsletter! We will write about strategy, finance, sales, marketing, communication and management — and provide lots of templates.
When you start a new role, first impressions are everything.
You want to establish credibility and trust quickly so you can get things done – and feel secure in your position.
A solid 30-60-90 day plan will go a long way. We created an 8-slide PowerPoint to help. Here’s the link to download.
Our high-level recommendation:
First 30 days: Learn and assess
Next 60 days: Align on a roadmap
Next 90 days: Execute on early-initiatives
Here are 4 steps to leverage this template:
Interview stakeholders
Prioritize initiatives with the ICE framework
Score early wins
Deliver crisp, clean messaging
Below, we’ll dive deeper into each of these steps and share best practices.

1. Interview stakeholders
Stakeholder interviews are a key input into your 30-60-90 day plan. You’ll want to speak with team members across levels – and customers too.
As a new employee, you have leeway to ask lots of questions. Use it!
Make a comprehensive list of team members to interview. Run the list by your manager and get started.
During your “listening tour,” ask open-ended questions to get full context. A few examples:
What are your top priorities for this quarter? This year?
How can I help you in my new role?
How do you see us working together?
What are some of the most impactful initiatives you’ve worked on?
What are potential roadblocks I should watch out for?
The insights from your “listening tour” are an important input into your 30-60-90 plan, especially the roadmap.
2. Prioritize initiatives with the ICE framework
Your stakeholder interviews will reveal a laundry list of competing priorities. Now, you will need to prioritize them using the ICE framework.
If you haven’t heard of the ICE framework, don’t worry! Here’s how it works:
The ICE framework is used to prioritize across three key dimensions:
Assign each input a 1-4 score and multiply to get a total score. The feature with the highest score should be prioritized.
See the template here. Note that you will see iterations of ICE with different scales; for example, your scale can end in 10.
3. Score early wins
The ICE framework will help you set a one-year roadmap.
In the process of making the roadmap, you will identify a set of small, high impact initiatives you can complete in your first 90 days. Work on these right away!
You want to demonstrate action. Not just strategy. So commit to a few manageable initiatives that can be completed quickly, but are high value-add.
With a few wins under your belt, your new team will have proof that you can execute and make a difference in the organization.
4. Deliver crisp, clean messaging
Our free 30-60-90 day plan PowerPoint template will ensure your reputation as a strong communicator.
Keep your presentation at the appropriate level of detail. Your audience wants to align on your high-level plan and next steps. Don’t bog them down with too many details.
